Hi, My name is Luke Vacca and I’m studying to be a paramedic at QUT.
I’ve just finished my first year and one of the highlights for me was my six week clinical placement where I was able to work full time with an ambulance crew seeing what the job’s really like.
It’s exciting, challenging and you have to think quickly on your feet which I really enjoy. QUT was the first university in QLD to offer the Paramedics Degree which resulted in strong ties with the QLD Ambulance Service.
I like the fact that the equipment we use is the same as they use on road. So it gives that real realistic feel to our course and when we go out on road we’re really well prepared. We’ve also got the new clinical learning simulation centre where paramedics and nurses go to practice scenarios and just get familiar with the gear we use.
I’m really looking forward to becoming a paramedic because I will have the skills and abilities to help people when they most need it.

My names Andrew Heathcock and I’m a QUT graduate in Pharmacy.
Pharmacy’s a lot more than just dispensing medication and knowing your tablets. Where our expertise really comes to floor is when we’re dealing with customers and explaining how to best use their medications.
Pharmacy course was conducted at the Gardens Point Campus in Brisbane. I studied both all the theoretical aspects of pharmacy, including drug knowledge and chemical composition of drugs, as well as how to use them and best use them for my patients. As well as they gave me a very good grounding in management and business principles.
The people I studied with are now all working in either community or hospital pharmacy, they all got jobs out of their degree and they all have excellent prospects for work next year as well as a fully registered pharmacist.
QUT throughout my degree placed me in different pharmacy environments, whether it would be hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy, so that I got a very good grounding in all aspects of pharmacy.
If you’ve got a good science background at school and you enjoy a chemistry as well as working with people and you like that varied sort of work environment, than pharmacy’s excellent as you do get a very diverse range of roles throughout the day, every day you work in pharmacy.

Hi, I’m Nic Sprenger and I’m a QUT Podiatry Graduate.
What I most enjoy about Podiatry is the different patients I see and the different conditions I treat.
Each day I’m looking after the rehabilitated needs, the surgical needs and also looking after orthotics with individuals.
I work in Sports Podiatry, we look after such teams as the Brisbane Lions and the Queensland Reds.
We look after bio mechanics and best ways to optimise their sporting function.
My background is in elite level swimming, I competed at two Olympic games.
Podiatry is a good way to express that because it not only deals with the persons sport, it deals with foot and ankle function in athletes.
So podiatry is a great way to get involved with peoples anatomy, rehabilitation and employment opportunities are very good worldwide.
Favourite part of the course was the internship, we were able to use our skills in the clinic setting, to apply both theoretical and knowledge skills to be able to treat patients.
That clinical experience was very valuable when it came to finding and securing my first job, which I really love.

Hi, My names Cassie and I’m studying Medical Imaging at QUT.
I really love that the course is run by industry professionals, they work part time in the hospitals and they’re really helpful when it comes to the labs in teaching us how to do it.
This course is the first of its kind in QLD, it’s really well established and highly regarded in the hospital setting. Some people think that medical imaging is just taking a picture, but it’s so much more than that. You can go to emergency, operating theatres, fluoro screening, interventional radiography, there’s many options.
It’s been really great to develop my skills, interact with patients and learn from practicing radiographers. I graduate at the end of the year, and looking back I’ve just had so much fun. I’ve been a part of the student association and I’ve made some really great friends.
I’m really looking forward to starting my career next year, I’ve already got a job lined up and I’m really excited about it.

Hi my name’s Heather, I’m studying Medical Ultrasound at QUT.
When I started talking about my interest in ultrasound to my colleagues here at the hospital, they highly recommended that I choose QUT for my study. QUT has a great reputation and has been doing this course for quite a long time; they’ve got a lot of experience.
The university hours fit in very well with my full time work, most of the lectures are held in the evening and there’s a lot of flexibility with online submitting of assignments and tutorials.
The best thing about having contact hours at the university is that I get to know the other students that are studying sonography quite well. I’ve made some really good friendships and some contacts throughout the industry and I get a chance to spend a lot of time with the lecturers face to face.
The way the program is structured is great. It allows me to work full time in my job here at the hospital and what’s really great is the time I spend here scanning in the ultrasound department, which is part of my normal job anyway, actually counts towards my prac at the university which is awesome.
The thing about being able to apply knowledge straight away in a clinical environment is that you’re not just studying for an exam, then writing the exam and forgetting all about it. You’re actually applying it and remembering it so it's information that you’re going to have for your future career.
I’m from Canada originally and part of the reason why I chose QUT is because QUT does have such a great reputation both locally and overseas. I’d recommend this course to anyone that’s considering studying in the Medical field. Ultrasound allows me to really have a positive impact on each patient that I see and I enjoy my work every day, I love it.

Hi, I’m Angelina and I studied radiation therapy at QUT.
As a radiation therapist, I treat people who have cancer. We formulate their treatment plans and we treat them on a day to day basis. You get to development a relationship with them and help them through their most vulnerable times. This is what’s really important to me.
As a student at QUT you have access to the latest technology. Things like stereotactics, tomo therapy and rapid arc, it’s really interesting. You need to think in 3D and you need to think outside the square.
I really love these classes because it gave us a sense of what radiation therapy was and then when we went on our clinical placements, we were really able to apply that knowledge that we learnt at Uni. On my first day of work it felt really natural, I felt like I was able to fit into the environment and I knew what I was doing.
One of the things that I think is really great about this profession is there are plenty of job opportunities, there are many new centres opening all the time. I really recommend this course to someone who can apply their technical skills in a clinical setting, they also need to be very nurturing and very caring towards people.
