Hi, My name is Hannah Mayr and I’m studying Nutrition and Dietetics here at QUT.

I chose to study Nutrition and Dietetics because I grew up in a family that emphasised healthy living.

I really love QUT because of the real world practical components of my course.

My learning isn’t just in the classroom.

The Dietetics profession is really diverse so it’s really great to try a wide range of things in my subjects.

Studying body parts, cooking or trying new foods from different countries.

And i find it really beneficial to listen to lecturers who have actually worked out in the real world and they can give me real examples of things that they’ve experienced, like Naturopaths, Epidemiologist, Dieticians and Scientists.

At the end of my course I will be an accredited practicing Dietician and a member of the Dieticians Association of Australia ready to work alongside other professionals in hospitals and health clinics treating and preventing diseases and promoting health in the community.

Hi, my name is Steven Timms, and I did a Bachelor of Exercise and Movement Science here at QUT.

And I’m a sports scientist for Cricket Australia.

One of the great things about this degree is that you can chose from a number of areas to specialise in.

From Performance Analysis, Sports Science, Research, Biomechanics or even Health and Wellness.

I chose Sports Science and Research.

I did numerous pracs here at QUT.

In my last year I did 100+ hours for Cricket Australia, as a sport scientist, and it gave me my current job there.

But I also had friends who worked at the mines, and in corporate settings here in Brisbane, as well different types of research here at QUT.

Generally my day at work is varied.

I can be out in the field or I can be analysing data at a desk.

The biggest thrill of my job is watching unknown cricketers from around the country coming through our program and then eventually going on to represent for Australia - becoming household names.

The most exciting thing about my job is the opportunity to travel.

Next week, I’m going to India for the world cup.

It makes me feel pretty chuffed to be honest, knowing that I have some small part in making a household name or getting the ashes back, or winning a series.

Or even just getting someone back on the park after an injury.

My name is Charlene, I have completed a Bachelor in Clinical Exercise Physiology.

At the moment I’m working in a variety of settings such as Musculoskeletal Rehab and Corporate Wellness and Health Promotion.

I enjoy it so much that when I basically wake up it doesn’t feel like a job.

Other allied health professionals refer patients to us if they want us to prescribe exercises for them.

When a patient comes to see me they can get their money back through Medicare or their Health fund.

The practicum opened my eyes up, it basically showed me what I want to be and what field I want to pursue.

Basically all the knowledge we use at the university, we apply it to the real world.

It is a big field; you can help someone with all kinds of conditions, which I thrive on. You can go to cardiac rehab, repertory rehab.

Cancer actually is a big one lately as well but my patient is in Musculoskeletal Rehab.

You feel like you’ve impacted someone’s life and you know that it’s going to impact their family as well as the longevity of their entire life.

Hi, My name’s Daisy Barnham. I graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Nutrition.

A Nutritionist works with community groups on a population level to make changes to everyday health.

The beauty of studying at QUT was the diversity of electives that were on offer.

So I was able to study things that were particularly relevant to me, so things like Government Policy and Sustainability.

When I was at QUT I did an 8 week placement with QLD Health and that was great.

I was working with a QLD primary school up in North Brisbane working with the kids to teach them what vegetables and fruit are nice and healthy and what foods they should avoid.

A degree in Nutrition really sets you up well to have a whole variety of career choices in front of you.

I’m now working for an environmental and food organisation following my passion to improve the sustainability of our food supply.

My degree in Nutrition from QUT has given me a really solid platform to go and take my skills and share them with the rest of the world and I think that’s pretty exciting.

My name is Lynne Daniels.

I’m a research professor in Nutrition and Dietetics.

One of the strengths of the School of Public health is that we have a range of exciting research activities across a number of areas.

For example health services management, environmental health and of course my own area, nutrition and dietetics.

One of the strengths of the research being done at QUT is that it addresses important real world global health problems.

So for example my area of interest is childhood obesity, which is one of the major health problems facing Australia and other developed countries.

The focus of my research is evaluating a programme called nourish.

Nourish is a group education programme for first time mothers that aims to help them use feeding practices that will develop healthy food preferences and healthy eating habits in their children as they grow up.

One of the exciting things about my research is that we got to work across a range of organisations with a range of different disciplines and a range of different people.

We work with psychologists and statisticians.

We’ve collaborated with a number of government departments and also with Flinders University in South Australia.

One of the things I find most rewarding about my research is working with all those mothers and babies and knowing that we’re going to make a difference.
