General Academic Advice

I believe I am eligible to apply for withdrawal without penalty from a unit. How do I make an application?

To apply for withdrawal without academic penalty you will need to write a letter outlining the units you wish to withdraw from and provide information and supporting documentation for your request. The letter should be addressed to:

Manager, Enrolments, Student Business Services QUT Victoria Park Rd Kelvin Grove Q 4059.

If you would like any further information regarding the process please contact either the School of Nursing, Student Information Centre or a Student Centre.

I believe I am eligible for special consideration for a unit(s) I am studying this semester. How do I apply?

Special Consideration forms are available from www.studentservices.com.au or from the Student Centres on any campus. The forms need to be completed and submitted to Student Services Student Centres on any campus.

I need to apply for a deferred assessment. How do I apply for a deferred assessment?

Deferred Examination forms are available from www.studentservices.com.au or from the Student Centres on any campus. The forms need to be completed either prior to or within 3 working days of the exam and submitted to Student Services Student Centres on any campus.

Can I take time out of the course?

You can apply to take leave from the course. After 6 months of study, students are allowed to take a one year leave of absence from their course, you will need to submit an L form to the Enrolments section. After 12 months leave from a course, any further leave of absence will have to be approved by the Course Coordinator before the form is submitted to Enrolments.

What study and personal support is available for me as a student at QUT?

QUT offers a range of services and workshops to support students during their study. Information on these can be obtained from the QUT web site at: www.qut.edu.au/services/studstaff/

I am having some personal problems. Who can I speak to about them?

QUT Counsellors are available through the Counselling service http://www.counselling.qut.edu.au/

How do I apply for an Academic Transcript?

Forms are available from http://www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/grad/records/index.jsp or from a Student Services Student Centre. Transcripts cost $10 and take approximately 10 working days to process.

I need further academic advice than is available as a FAQ. Where can I get advice?

Useful information is available on the QUT University www.qut.com and School of Nursing www.hlth.qut.edu.au/nrs websites. If you need to speak with an academic advisor, you should contact the Student Information Centre on the 4th floor of the School of Nursing building or telephone 3138 3824. They will either answer your question for you or make an appointment for you to see the Course Coordinator

 

Enrolment and Class Allocation

How do I access a class timetable?

Class timetables are available online at https://qutvirtual.qut.edu.au/pls/qv/ttab_public_p.show Timetables become available from week 12 of the semester preceding the semester of study, ie: the timetable for semester 2 is available in week 12 of semester 1.

How do I enrol in the units I am going to study this year?

Students enrol online via QUT Virtual at https://qutvirtual.qut.edu.au You will also need to consult the course summary sheet for your course available from http://www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/help/forms/css.jsp

I want to alter my enrolment. How do I do it?

You can alter your enrolment through QVirtual so long as you have not passed the final dates for alteration of enrolment.

When can I allocate to tutorials?

An email will be sent to all students containing the dates that the allocation system will open. You CANNOT allocate before the system is open.

How do I allocate to a tutorial on the class allocations system?

I did not get the tutorial time I need, what can I do now?

All students MUST allocate to a tutorial/unilab, even if the tutorial you allocate to is not the tutorial you wished for. In the event that the tutorial you allocate to is not suitable for whatever reason, you may petition your UNIT COORDINATOR by email for the tutorial you require. However if you are NOT ALLOCATED to a tutorial your unit coordinator WILL NOT be able to help you. Students should also note that you will only be placed into a tutorial by a unit coordinator under extenuating circumstances. Obviously it is not possible for us to place all students into the tutorial that they prefer.

Applying for credit

How do I apply for credit, I think that I am eligible?

Credit forms are available from www.studentservices.qut.com or from the Student Services Student Centre.

I have applied for credit how long will it take to process?

3-6 weeks. Application status can be checked with the School of Nursing Student information Centre (SIC) or Student Information Line on 3138 2000

Can I do part of my nursing degree at another institution?

Yes, most likely. You will need approval and once the units (subjects) are completed you will need to apply for credit.

I am a hospital prepared Enrolled Nurse what credit will I get?

You will receive an exemption from undertaking the 1st year unit entitled Clinical Placement 1

I am a hospital prepared Enrolled Nurse and have completed the Medication Endorsement what credit will I get?

You will receive an exemption for Clinical Placement 1 and your 3rd year elective

I have completed the Diploma of Nursing how much credit will I get?

If you have completed the Diploma of Nursing in QLD from 1999 onwards you will be eligible for 96 Credit Points and will commence the course in 2nd Year. You DO NOT need to apply for the academic credit it will be automatically added to your record.
Study and Assessment

How do I hand in an assignment?

For all units with these codes (NSB, NSN or HHB) where you are enrolled as an internal (on campus) student assignments are now to be submitted through Assignment Minder, located with the Student Computing Help Desk in D202, Kelvin Grove. Assignments are not to be submitted directly to the School of Nursing. More details about the Assignment Minder System can be found here: www.am.qut.edu.au

I have lost an assignment?

You need to contact your unit coordinator in order to inform them of your loss. You may need to provide proof that you handed in the assignment.

I am unhappy with a final grade, what do I do?

You need to reflect on the reasons for the grade and make an appointment to see your tutor for feedback. If you are not satisfied with the feedback you receive you can make an appointment to see the unit coordinator in order to voice your concerns. Students have the right to appeal a final grade and this can be done by submitting a Review of Grade form available from www.studentservices.qut.com or from the Student Services Student Centres on any campus. Once completed there is a $20 fee which is payable at the campus cashier and the forms need to be handed in at the Student Services Student Centre.

I have been unsuccessful in passing a unit. What do I do?

You will need to repeat the unit in order to successfully complete your course. Many students overload their workload by one unit in order to repeat a unit and some increase the number of semesters they need in order to complete their course. However, if after reflection you feel that you need some advice make a visit to the Student Information Centre on the 4th floor of the School of Nursing building or telephone 3138 3824.

English is my second language and I want to use a dictionary during my examination(s). Am I eligible and how do I apply?

The Faculty of Health recognises that students from Non-English Speaking Backgrounds may require the use of dictionaries and extra time during examinations. Further information and Application forms are available at the following website: www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/atqut/exams/dictionaries.jsp

Graduating Students

How many credit points do I need in order to graduate?

Each unit you undertake is worth 12 credit points. The Bachelor of Nursing requires 288 credit points, and the double degrees vary. You can check you Course Summary Sheet or QUT Handbook on the web. However, you also need to have met all degree requirements, including passing all core units as specified in the QUT Handbook. If you are unsure if you will be eligible to graduate please check with the Nursing Student Information Centre.

I am not on the list of potential graduands what do I do?

Consult Student Information Centre staff if you have met all requirements.

When is graduation?

Ceremonies are held in February for students who completed their course the previous November. Students who undertake summer school will graduate in ceremonies held in April/May and students who finish their course in July will graduate in Sept/Oct. How do I apply for Queensland Nursing Council (QNC) Registration?

You will need to apply directly to the QNC for registration. Further information is available from the QNC website at: www.qnc.qld.gov.au/ You can apply for registration prior to completing your last semester of study. At the end of each semester the School of Nursing advises the QNC of all students eligible for registration. The School of Nursing hosts an information session on registration with the QNC in second semester each year, which is advertised via email.

How do I gain registration overseas?

You will need to obtain the necessary forms from the Registration Board of the country you will be going to. You will also need either an original Academic Transcript (available from Student Records) or a certified copy of your original. These documents then need to be handed in to the School of Nursing Student Information Centre for processing, there is a $50 fee for this service. They will be mailed to the Board of Registration by the School.

What assistance does QUT give to help me apply for a job?

QUT Careers & Employment Service is offers students a range of services, including resume presentation. The School of Nursing also host an information session by QHealth on the application process in the second half of the year.

New Students

How much does the course cost?

Fees vary from year to year but are an accumulation of your HECS or International Tutution fee(s) + Uniform + Textbooks + Student Guild Fees. More information regarding fees is available by calling the Student Information Line on 3138 2000 or from the Student Services web site at www.studentservices.qut.edu.au

When is Orientation day?

Orientation Activities are scheduled the week prior to the commencement of Semester 1. Information on what activities are held and specific Nursing Orientation activities is available from the QUT.

Do I need a computer at home?

It is not compulsory to have a computer but it is highly recommended as most of your course material and information is available on-line. A computer will make studying easier and your efforts will be maximised.

I have a disability what assistance will QUT give me?

Assistance for people with a disability is a priority of the university. Information about assistance for disability is available from the following website: www.qut.edu.au/services/studstaff/specneeds/

Should I buy any textbooks prior to beginning study?

Once you have enrolled in your Units on QVirtual. You can access the Campus Bookshop on-line services via QVirtual, which includes a personalised booklist. Generally, your Unit Coordinator will advise you at your first lecture of which text would be the most suitable to purchase. Copies of the textbooks are also kept in the Library.

Can I be a student representative within the School of Nursing?

Yes. If you are interested in becoming a Student Representative please contact the School of Nursing Student Information Centre, located on Level 4 of N Block, Kelvin Grove Campus.

Potential Students

When can I start an undergraduate course in nursing at QUT?

QUT has a February & July intake for the Bachelor of Nursing and the Bachelor of Nursing Graduate Entry. There is also a February entry for the Bachelor of Nursing at Caboolture Campus.
Applications are made through the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) and further information can be obtained from the QTAC website at: www.qtac.edu.au .

I have not studied for years, how do I apply?

We have other people in the course who also have not studied for many years. All applications are made through QTAC. Information on how a ranking can be determined is available from the QUT website or from QTAC.

Can I transfer from another University?

No, you cannot transfer, however you may apply through QTAC to be admitted into a QUT course and then apply for academic credit from your previous studies. You should check the University Credit Precedent list to see what academic credit we have previously granted students from other Universities.

I did not get a QTAC offer into Nursing, what do I do now?

You are encouraged to apply again and undertake further studies to increase your chances, including TAFE or year 12. QTAC will be able to give you advice on increasing your chances of gaining entry next time you apply.

What are the course hours?

Full-time students undertake 48 credit points (4 units or subjects) as part of a normal full-time load. Part-time study involves 24 credit points (2 units or subjects). The exact attendance hours per unit vary but are generally is between 12 and 15 hours per week on campus attendance per full-time semester.

Can I do the course externally?

No, not at QUT, however a select number of units can be undertaken externally in the 3rd year of the undergraduate course.
