What does a Registered Nurse do?

registered nurse practical trainingNurses are an integral part of the health sector, providing health care to individuals, families and communities in a wide range of settings which include public and private hospitals, community and home-based services, nursing homes and industry. Nursing provides you the opportunity to help and care for people within the health environment, as well as providing a rewarding and diverse career with unlimited job opportunities. Nurses assess patient/client needs, develop interventions and implement a plan of nursing care that meets patients’ physiological, psychological, social and cultural needs. Nurses work with multi-disciplinary teams, whilst holding individual accountability and responsibility for the care they deliver.

Undergraduate Degree Options

A Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing Graduate Entry course will prepare you for practice as a new graduate nurse in a wide variety of health care settings. These include public and private hospitals and nursing homes, as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services, school health, Aboriginal health, pathology laboratories and the armed services. Some of you will go on to specialize in a specific area of nursing practice such as aged care, mental health, paediatrics, midwifery, intensive care, cancer, emergency nursing or women's health.

 

The Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Exercise and Movement Science double degree combines the disciplines of nursing and exercise and sport science. You will be prepared for employment as a new graduate nurse in a wide variety of settings that include public and private hospitals and nursing homes, as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services and school health. As well you will be prepared for employment in the fitness, exercise and rehabilitation industry.

 

The Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Health Science (Public Health) double degree combines the disciplines of nursing and public health. You will be prepared for employment as a new graduate nurse in a wide variety of settings that include public and private hospitals and nursing homes, as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services and school health. As well you will be prepared for employment in public health settings such as community health centres, divisions of general practice, non-governmental health organisations, and international health agencies.

The Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) double degree combines the disciplines of nursing and paramedic practice. You will be prepared for employment as a new graduate nurse in a wide variety of settings that include public and private hospitals and nursing homes, as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services and school health. As well you will be prepared for employment as an ambulance paramedic providing pre-hospital care, emergency medical response and specialised patient transportation services. *subject to approval by the Queensland Nursing Council

The Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) double degree combines the disciplines of nursing and psychology and counselling. You will be prepared for employment as a new graduate nurse in a wide variety of settings that include public and private hospitals and nursing homes, as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services and school health. As well you will be prepared for employment in settings such as education, human resources, market research, organisational development, policing, health and human services and counselling. On completion of this course some of you will go on to further study to become a registered psychologist. *subject to approval by the Queensland Nursing Council

Career Opportunities

Nursing graduates are in high demand and have excellent employment opportunities in a variety of health care settings or health promotion agencies. These include public and private hospitals and nursing homes, as well as community service areas such as community health, occupational health, domiciliary nursing services, school health, Aboriginal health, pathology laboratories, alcohol and drug dependence and the armed services. Many nurses specialise in a specific area such as aged care, mental health, paediatrics, midwifery, intensive care, cancer, medical/surgical, community practice, emergency or women's health.
