Postgraduate student research is a vital component of the School of Public Health. The School endeavours to conduct both basic and applied research that promotes the development, delivery, evaluation and dissemination of innovative and effective public health interventions and practice, for the benefit of the community.
In the School of Public Health, we know that research students thrive when they have a topic they are passionate about, a supervisor who supports their learning, and a leading-edge research environment that challenges their thinking.
Our research activities are designed for health professionals interested in moving into the public health area, mid-career health professionals seeking advancement in their area of work and clinicians wishing to broaden their range of expertise.
Areas of Research:
- Promoting child and adolescent health and well-being (topics such as abuse, resilience, mental health, and nutrition, using frameworks of cross-cultural surveys, longitudinal studies, and randomised controlled trials)
- Investigating social and economic inequalities in health (multilevel studies of food purchasing and physical activity, descriptive studies and intervention research on Indigenous health and health in rural communities)
- Preventing and managing chronic diseases and disabling conditions (including self-management of chronic disease, cancer screening and early detection, cancer recovery and quality of life among survivors and carers, reduction of hospital-acquired infection, prevention of falls among older people)
- Advancing sustainable development and environmental health (varying effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and climate change on health and disease)
- Health services research and workforce development (including health economic assessments, quality and utility of morbidity and mortality data; podiatric medicine; paramedic services; community and workforce capacity building in public health)
Health issues of particular interest include nutrition and diet; behavioural risk factors such as physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol use; cancer, cardiovascular disease, and obesity; child maltreatment and protection; environmental health; emergency and disaster management; hospital-acquired infection; foot and musculoskeletal health; healthy ageing.
