1. How do I apply for credit for previous studies?

Complete an Application for Academic Credit Form and submit this to a QUT Student Centre.

2. I have applied for credit, how long will it take to process?

4 - 8 weeks. Application status can be checked with the School of Public Health Student Centre on 3138 3368 or the Student Information Line on 3138 2000.

3. I haven’t heard the outcome of my credit application. In what units do I enrol?

Do not assume that your request for credit will be approved. Attend classes in the standard enrolment program, as well as classes for those units in which you will enrol if your credit is approved.

4. Can I do a unit at another university as part of my course?

Yes, most likely. You will need approval from your Course Coordinator. Once you complete the unit you must apply for credit at QUT. Check the Student Services website for more information on cross-institutional enrolment.

5. I have a problem with my enrolment, what do I do?

Remember that correct enrolment is your responsibility. Check your QUT Virtual enrolment status from time to time to ensure it is correct. If you believe there is an error contact Student Services or ask for advice from the School by emailing sph.studentcentre@qut.edu.au

When you add or withdraw units via the online enrolment system (QUTVirtual), remember to hit SUBMIT to record your changes.

6. My classes clash, what do I do?

Please bring clashes in the standard course structure timetable to the attention of the School's Student Centre by emailing sph.studentcentre@qut.edu.au or by dropping in (O-D611).

If you are following a non-standard course structure (because of approved credit, failure of units from a previous semester, or other reasons) requests to reschedule classes will not be granted. If you have a clash between an elective and a core unit, or between two electives, you must withdraw from a unit or choose another elective.

7. When can I allocate to tutorials?

An email will be sent to all students containing the dates that the allocation system will open. You CANNOT allocate before the system is open.

8. How do I allocate to a tutorial on the class allocations system?

Log into QUTVirtual and hit the link which says ‘view/change class allocations.’ Choose the unit you wish to allocate to and hit the link which says ‘select class.’

9. I did not get the tutorial time I need, what can I do now?

If your tutorial clashes with a class for a core unit you may request to be moved to another tutorial, but only if you are enrolled in a standard program of study. A request to move tutorial simply because that tutorial time is inconvenient to you will not normally be allowed, especially if other tutorials are full. Try to swap tutorial times with another student. School administration staff cannot do the swap for you, as this could disadvantage the other student.

10. A short-term illness will affect my attendance at class or my ability to submit an assessment item, what do I do?

Get a medical certificate and contact your unit coordinator. If you are unable to submit an assessment item by the due date, ask your unit coordinator about the possibility of getting an extension. Note that administration staff in the School's Student Centre cannot give you an extension.

11. I am ill and may not be well for sometime, what do I do?

Contact your unit coordinators, subject area coordinator or the course coordinator. If your illness will affect your studies for the majority of the semester you should consider one of the following options:

12. I have a problem with my end of semester exam timetable, what do I do?

Preliminary exam timetables are released five weeks before examinations begin. Please refer to student services in regards to scheduling exams. QUT has strict policy regarding student availability for exams. Refer to the Examinations Office Webpage for more information.

13. What if I am sick, or something happens outside my control, and I can't attend an exam?

For a mid-semester exam, contact your lecturer or unit coordinator. If you are ill you will need a medical certificate.

For an end of semester exam, you must submit an Application for Deferred Examination prior to, or within 3 days of, the exam date. You must attach supporting documentation. See the deferred exams webpage. http://www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/assess/exams/defer.

Note: Your request may be rejected and, if you have missed the exam, you may fail the unit. A certificate stating "medical condition" or "unfit for duty" or similar will not be accepted. Requests for deferred exams due to work commitments, holidays, and overseas travel will not be approved.

13. What if I sit an exam but feel my performance was hampered by illness or other considerations?

For a mid-semester exam speak to your unit coordinator and explain the situation.

For an end of semester exam, you must submit an Application for Special Consideration within three days of the exam. You must attach supporting documentation. See the special consideration webpage. http://www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/assess/exams/consider.jsp.

14. I am unhappy with my assignment mark, what can I do?

Speak to your lecturer, unit coordinator or tutor. If you remain unhappy with your mark, contact your subject area coordinator in the first instance and then the undergraduate course coordinator.

15. I am unhappy with a final grade, what do I do?

If you believe a final grade for a unit is incorrect or unjust you may submit a Review of Grade Form to a QUT Student Centre. Be aware that on reviewing your grade the grade can be altered either up or down. For more information refer to the Reviews and Appeals webpage.

16. I want to use my first year of study to 'upgrade' my OP ranking and get into another QUT course.

For courses with an entry ranking of 94 (OP 4) or higher you must complete a minimum of one full-time year (96 credit points) in order to improve your results. Any units for which you received exemption or academic credit do not count towards your 96cp load. If you do less than 96cp, even a GPA of 6.5 will not convert to an entry ranking higher than 94. For more details refer to Real Options or contact that faculty's QUT Student Centre.

17. I want to use my current BHlthSc major to 'upgrade' to another BHlthSc major next year. What can I enrol in  now?

You must enrol in at least three units per semester following the standard course structure of your current course/major. See the relevant Course Summary Sheets. You may substitute your fourth unit for one from another course/major provided you meet the prerequisites. If you do not upgrade, this substituted unit may not count when graduation eligibility is determined. Please seek academic advice before substituting units.

If you choose to underload (ie, enrol in less than 4 units) you cannot do units from another course/major. Your rank will not be as high as if you had completed 8 units. If you need more advice contact the Student Centre sph.studentcentre@qut.edu.au.

18. May I take time out of the course?

After 6 months of study, undergraduate students are allowed to take a one year leave of absence from their course. You must submit an Online Application for Leave (L) form. After 12 months leave from a course, any further leave of absence will have to be approved by the Course Coordinator before the L Form is submitted.

19. What are QUT's due dates?

Visit the Student Services website for the academic calender and key administrative dates.

20. I am having problems with my studies, what can I do?

Seek advice from your unit coordinators, subject area coordinator or the course coordinator. QUT offers a range of services and workshops to support students during their study. Check the Services and Support webpage.

21. I need help with some personal problems.

QUT Counsellors are available through counselling services

22. What do I do if I feel I am being discriminated against?

QUT takes any form of discrimination very seriously. If you are experiencing discrimination from another student in a particular class, speak to the unit coordinator/lecturer. If you believe a staff member is discriminating against you, and you feel you cannot discuss this matter with that person, contact the Course Coordinator or Academic Affairs Officer. You can also contact the Equity Office for support and advice, or the Student Guild.

23. What do I do if I have a complaint?

If it is a unit matter talk to your unit coordinator, lecturer or tutor in the first instance and then talk to your subject area coordinator or course coordinator. If the issue is about QUT services or other matters, contact a QUT Student Centre. You may also contact the Student Guild for advice.

24. I've been excluded from my course. What does this mean?

Students who achieve a low GPA or repeatedly fail one or more units can be excluded from their course. Students' records are reviewed at the end of each year. Refer to the Student Services website for more details regarding unsatisfactory academic performance.

Students may appeal against exclusion. Refer to the Student Services website for more information on appeals against exclusion. Note: An application to be readmitted into the course will not be considered until 12 months has elapsed. Refer to the Student Services website for more information on re-enrolling after a period of absence.

25. I've been put on probation. What does this mean?

Students who have a high level of fails or have failed a unit more than once can be put on probation. This means that the university will monitor your results for the next academic period. Students who are put on probation are expected to seek academic advice from their subject area coordinator and/or seek assistance from other QUT services (eg, Counselling) as required. Refer to the Student Services website for more details regarding unsatisfactory academic performance.
