If you are interested in become a Paramedic and have already completed a degree in a health related field, you may receive 1 year academic credit in the Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) - Graduate Entry.
What does a Paramedic do?
As an ambulance employee you are called upon to service the people of Queensland and Australia in a consistant and diligent manner focusing on both urgent and non-urgent ambulance care and transportation
The major role of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is to reduce pain, suffering and loss of life through efficient professional pre-hospital care and specialised patient transportation.
On a day-to-day basis paramedics may deal with any number of call outs, however it's important to consider the work is varied and not all "code one's" (Emergencies). For example, much of a paramedic's work consists of patient transport of elderly people and people who have regular dialysis treatment. Paramedics must learn to deal with the emotional situations that accompany their work by understanding people and by learning how to comfort families during stressful times.
If you're thinking about becoming a paramedic, please consider some of the following questions which outline some of the attributes of an Ambulance Officer:
- Are you a good team member who can work well by yourself if required?
- Are you prepared to work within the rules?
- Do you enjoy working with your hands?
- Are you a good communicator?
- Are you a caring and tolerant person?
- Are you physically and emotionally fit and able to perform ambulance duties?
