What does a Public Health Professional do?

Graduates in Health Science (Public Health) have an essential role in the health-care system. Their primary aim is to promote health and wellness of the whole population. Public Health graduates can work as health promotion officers, school health educators, assistant epidemiologists, researchers, state and national health program managers and health policy officers. During their training, many students at QUT combine study of Public Health with professional qualifications in Nursing, Human Movement Studies or Media and Communications. Some students prefer to focus on International Health and undertake overseas field training.

Regardless of which path you decide to take, completion of the BHSc (Public Health) prepares you to make a real difference to improve the health of many people in the community.

Course Highlights

The Bachelor of Health Science (Public Health) involves the study of a variety of disciplines essential for practice, including health system management and finance, psychology, sociology, communication, nutrition, epidemiology, statistics and evaluation methods. Practical placements in public health settings are used to develop skills to prepare you for the workplace.

Students can also tailor their own course to prepare themselves for a postgraduate diploma (one year) which is necessary for professional registration as an Environmental Health Officer, Occupational Health and Safety Officer, or Health Information Manager. After some years work experience, BHSc (Public Health) graduates often complete a Masters of Public Health, which qualifies them to become epidemiologists or health systems managers.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates are employed in Queensland Health Linked to another web site and national government health and education departments in areas such as health promotion practice, school health education, cancer prevention, sexual and reproductive health, epidemiology and research and evaluation.
