What does a Risk Manager do?
Risk management is not a new activity. Humanity has been managing risks for thousands of years. However, the formal discipline of risk management is relatively new and continues to grow and expand in importance. Originally - as a formal discipline - risk management was identified with insurance. In recent years, however, the scope has expanded and the modern understanding of risk management is that it encompasses many fields.
Part of the importance of the development of risk management as a discipline is the integration that has occurred between many previously diverse risk management activities.
The Australian and New Zealand Standard on Risk management AS/NZS 4360:2004 provides the following definition (p. 4):
Risk management - the culture, processes and structures that are directed towards realizing potential opportunities whilst managing adverse effects.
