Hi, my name is Mark Gregory and I’m studying Social Work at QUT.

Studying Social Work helps me be a better person and it gives me a career opportunity, where I can help others with their goals and their dreams.

The Social Work lecturers at QUT are absolutely amazing, their passion is real and infectious.

The great thing about Social Work is that there are so many different areas you can work in, whether you want to pursue a career in Child Protection, Youth Work, International Practise or Research, QUT will take you there.

QUT also offers a double degree option which is pretty unique really, unless you specialise even further.

When I graduate I will already have 980 hours of practical experience and I will be an internationally recognised Social Worker.

I’m currently employed as a Youth Worker and I absolutely love it.

I want to get into research, policy analysis and development so I can advocate governments to get more resources for young people.

I love Social Work, in Social Work I have found myself. It is fantastic!

I’m Lydia Deutscher. I’m a QUT Graduate, with a degree in public health. I chose to work in public health because it’s a really exciting and expanding field with a broad range of career opportunities. And at QUT you start with the core subjects, but then you can elect an area of interest that aligns with your career goals.

I’ve always been really passionate about politics, and my degree has set me up well for a career in federal government because I have a solid background in public policy, project management, environmental science, and community nutrition.

I know this, I know it! (laughter)

One of the highlights of my degree was being able to represent QUT in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Where my research partner and I were able to study environmental health policy, public health nutrition, and water treatment.

And then following my degree at QUT I spent 2 months working as a summer intern in Washington DC. Attending industry meetings with US Senators on Capitol Hill, sitting in on a policy task force for health care reform, and getting to network at some industry awards nights.

It was awesome.

I’m currently working for my local member of federal parliament, and one day ideally I would love to work for the United Nations in New York, in the economic and social development branch.

QUT really is the university for the real world.

Hi, My name is Jessica and I did a double degree in Human Services and Justice at QUT.

I decided to study Human Services because I like the idea of helping people and making a difference in their life.

It gave me lots of options in terms of employment and left me with lots of experience within the industry.

One of the highlights of my degree was doing two placements, the first was at a children’s contact centre and the second was at probation and parole.

I really loved going out on placement, because it gave me experience in the field that I wanted to work in.

One that I couldn’t gain at other universities and after my second placement I got offered a job.

Human Services is such a diverse field and I love that at QUT I can specialise in the area that I want to work.

The lecturers at QUT have real world experience and can offer practical examples to all the theory they throw at us.

I chose QUT because it gave me the options of doing a double degree and gave me that extra edge when it came to my career.

I currently work full time as a Probation and Parole Officer. I really enjoy watching offenders complete their orders without contravention.

I love my job because every day is different and I get to help offenders change their lives for the better.

I’m David Stewart, I’m a Manager in the Health Care industry and I’m studying a Masters of Health Management at QUT.

A Masters of Health Management provides me with an excellent opportunity to learn from professional leaders who have worked in the field for many years. It is an easy course to study in the sense that it’s part time. I can work from home and on the internet.

The course allows you to study a number of different disciplines as its major. Quality and Safety is one of the areas that I’m looking forward to getting into. I’ve also had a large amount of experience with emergency preparedness and would hopefully be able to do some subjects around that as well.

The benefits of studying this course is the practical nature of it means that I’m able to employ some the learning’s that I currently have as through the subjects and take them on board and use them in my job that I now have.

This course is essential for me because it provides me with the qualifications that I required to move into executive management.

My name is Helen and I’m doing a Master of Social Work at QUT.

By doing the Master of Social work I had the opportunity to fast track from two years to one year and by doing that I was able to do a personal learning plan and take my time and do my studies from home.

Occasionally I would come into the university for intense courses but most the time I spent my time doing my study at home using Skype, iPods and interacting with other students online by using the Internet.

Having the opportunity to work with the professionals that delivered the lectures and tutes and the intense workshops have been a real eye opener and a support that they come from the real world and they have that experience of sharing their expertise and their learning and their understanding with the students for the social work profession.

Hi, My name’s Freyr Patterson and I hold a Master of Public Health through QUT.

This degree is perfect for people like me.

Professionals already in the work force looking to expand their knowledge and skills in terms of the broader issues that impact on health and the delivery of health care services and also work towards long term career goals.

I chose to study at QUT for a number of reasons.

It’s an internationally recognised university.

It also provided a really flexible setting for me to complete my study.

I studied full time from London, part time from Bangladesh and part time from Melbourne when I was working as an occupational therapist.

There are options in this degree to specialise or study across a broad range of subjects.

You can also choose to focus on research or course work, or both.

I specialised in Health Promotion and the thing that I enjoyed the most about my study was learning about the things that impact on peoples decisions about their health and subsequently their behaviours that they do in relation to their health.

I’m currently working as an Occupational Therapist with clients with brain injuries and my Masters Degree in Public Health has not only provided me with a broader understanding of health and the health care system but it’s also helped me to develop leadership skills and work towards achieving my career goals.

My name’s Aaron Hieatt, I’m a graduate of QUT. I have a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health, and I work in water quality.

Being an Environmental Health Officer is a challenging job. I work in government, with Environmental Health Officers there’s always an opportunity for a job. You can work in defence forces, you can work in private industry. The skills and understanding that Environmental Health Officers have, is always in demand.

The classmates that I’ve met, the professors that I’ve met have all be very helpful and encouraging in my profession. It’s nice to know that if I do encounter a problem, if I come across a challenge that I’ve never seen before, that I have people I can go to get advice and to help me find a good solution that’s going to make sense in the setting I’m in.

QUT is one of the only places in Australia you can go to get a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health, which is necessary to work as an Environmental Health Officer in QLD, or in Australia for that matter.

Environmental Health is a great field. One day I can be out collecting water samples, and the same day be in a five star restaurant making sure that they’re doing everything properly.

I think the most rewarding thing about doing Environmental Health is that if you do your job right, people don’t get sick. And you’re protecting their health and making sure that they can have a safe and happy life.

My name is Geoff Hitchings, I have a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from QUT.

The Graduate Diploma has set me up with a rather unique skill set. It can be applied across a whole range of industries, Occupational Hygiene, Ergonomics, Law, Industrial Relations and Safety Technology.

Once you’ve graduated from the Graduate Diploma, you can then pick different fields to work in, maybe different specialities or specialise in different industries. Some may pick Mining, some Construction or maybe the Health industry.

Occupational Health and Safety professionals are in demand in every industry in Australia and also overseas. I know of graduates from QUT that are working now in New Zealand and in America and also England.

The biggest kick out of doing the job is actually providing a safe working environment for workers at work. To allow them to go home in the same condition that they arrived at work that day.

The Graduate Diplomas in Occupational Health and Safety, and Environmental Health offered at QUT are great degrees for students who want to enter an industry with challenging and interesting jobs.

The courses are open to all students who have completed undergraduate studies in science-related fields.

We have a number of students who’ve come into the grad dips from nursing, engineering, science, health sciences.

Also we will accept students who have had extensive professional experience in the area.

One of the really good things about this postgraduate course is that it’s very flexible.

You can do internally or externally.

If you’re an internal student, you can also access all the external material.

We understand that students doing this course often have very busy lives outside the course, so there’s a lot of consideration given in the way the course is delivered to be flexible.

Both these degrees are well recognised by industry, and graduates generally have no problem in finding a job.

In fact industry recruitment agencies often contact us to find suitable candidates for existing vacancies.

Graduates from the OHS degree, often get employment as safety advisors and safety managers in mining, construction, health industry and a whole range of industries.

Graduates from environment health often get positions in councils as environmental health officers, and with state governments.

The great thing about this course is that the students are often working in the industry and the course is set up so there’s an ability to share information and there’s a lot of interaction between students.

This is done on the web and also face-to-face in lectures for internal students.

If you are thinking about enrolling in Grad Dip EH or the Grad Dip OHS I can only recommend it.

I’ve been working in this area for many years and found it very rewarding and very fulfilling.

It’s a great career option.

The Master of Social work is a relatively new course at QUT.

This course offers you an opportunity to advance your skills in social work or indeed to have a career change.

It’s formally recognised by the Australian Association of Social Workers, and therefore that gives you qualification to practise social work around the world.

To get into the course you need a degree that is formally recognised at an undergraduate level within Australia.

A really important feature of social work in the Australian context is that there are very good employment opportunities.

Recent surveys by relevant agencies have indicated that there are good opportunities for employment across a wide variety of social work sectors, so that includes work in the hospital sector, opportunities within government sector and particularly opportunities within a number of non-government organisations that operate in the social welfare and social work arena.

It is really important that if you undertake a social work course that you have a very clear appreciation of the type of work that you will be involved in.

So within our course, it is grounded well and truly into real social work practice.

That involves the integration of all of our academics units with social work practice and in particular a great focus on getting out into the field, doing social work in a supervised contact and getting a real appreciation of the skills and knowledge and circumstances within which social work is practiced.

So we have a great emphasis here on real world social work practice as an integral feature of our course.

In designing the masters we really took into account the fact that we live in a wonderful information and communication age.

So if you do this course, you will find that a lot of the teaching and learning is done in the convenience of your own home using a variety of communication and information technologies.

Social work is an extraordinary profession, it’s all about the really good, the really bad, wonderful things that people can do, contributing to people in all sorts of circumstances.

So if you’re interested in a really interesting profession that gives you a real look at life on this planet, then maybe the Master of Social Work is for you.

The masters programs in the School of Public Health are ideal for students who come mostly from a health background, either a clinical role, nursing, medicine etc or have done public health undergraduate degrees.

But they’re not exclusively so, they are also available for students who may be wishing to seek a change in career.

There are three masters programs within the School of Public Health.

The Master of Public Health, which is ideal for people who are interested in the community health, the health of populations.

The Master of Health Management which is ideal for people who see themselves having a role in terms of the management system of the future and the Master of Heath Science which is ideal for people who are interested in more in the scientific aspects of health and of health systems.

Within the three masters programs there is considerable flexibility in terms of the study areas that you can choose.

Ranging from emergency and disaster management through to health system management through to things like environmental health.

This enables you to construct a course of study which meets not only your particular needs at this time but your future career aspirations.

Our programs are also designed to be flexible where you can really start with as little as doing a short course and you can gradually build that up through a graduate certificate, graduate diploma to a full masters program.

So if you’re not sure at this stage whether you want to take on the full work of a masters program, you can start with more manageable pieces.

The people who deliver our programs here at QUT have extensive experience in the health system.

Some of them are still involved directly in providing management within the system or in organising delivering public health services within the community.

If you’re interested in undertaking postgraduate study here at QUT then by all means, come and talk to us.

We’re very happy to help you with your decisions about which courses to choose.

There are many career pathways that are opening up within the health system.

It’s a rapidly evolving system and we’re very happy to provide whatever assistance we can to seeing how you best fit into the future of that system and how you can best contribute to the future of health care in this country.
