Achievements
- Host of the National Centre for Health Information Research and Training (NCHIRT)
NCHIRT is a member of the World Health Organisation Family of International Classification (WHO-FIC). Its research focuses on the quality and utility of routinely collected health data, health surveillance and injury prevention.
- The AusSun Research Lab

The School’s AusSun Research Lab, part of the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation
, has grown rapidly to become an international centre of renown, investigating the human health impacts of ultraviolet radiation. The Director is Chief Investigator on four current NHMRC Project grants and the research extends internationally via two grants of the National Institute of Health in the US to assess environmental UVA exposure and the role of vitamin D in bone growth. Centre research received the International Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award of the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2006.
- Sun protection consortium
This corsortium, led by researchers from the School, will drive a $0.7 million project for Population Health Queensland to undertake a comprehensive applied research project to demonstrate the effectiveness of sun protection measures which influence high risk outdoor workers in Queensland to adopt sun safe behaviour practices.
- Funding success
- The School has attracted significant category 1, 2 and 3 funding and has grown its capacity through a range of prestigious fellowships/scholarships. The School currently has five NHMRC Training/ Career Development/Senior Research Fellowships, National Breast Cancer Foundation Fellowship and Peter Doherty Fellowship holders.
- In 2009 we received significant funding from the National Institute of Health (USA) research into healthcare acquired infection and modelling the economics of reducing deep infections after hip replacement. We have a strong partnership with the Centre for Health Related Infection Surveillance and Prevention (CHRISP) based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (Brisbane) for this project.
- We received a total of $1.4 million in social work and human services research grants in 2009, in areas such as: use of public space, disability, action research and cross-cultural issues related to child safety.
- The school received $6.3 million from Atlantic Philanthropies to build academic staff research capacity and improve teaching at Vietnamese Universities.
- Improving Health Outcomes for People (IHOP) research group
This group is focused on improving health outcomes for people with cancer. Three senior researchers within the group have received national recognition for their research excellence, placing cancer and physical activity research on the national agenda.
- 2009 Prime Minister’s Asia Australia Endeavour Award
PhD student Linda Murray was received the award for research on women’s mental health in Vietnam (specifically postnatal depression).
- Cross-disciplinary linkages across health in Indigenous health and homelessness.
- Clinical Academic Research Fellow in child and youth mental health
Our Clinical Academic Research Fellow is a joint appointment between the School and Queensland Health’s Child and Youth Mental Health Services for five years to focus on practice-based research concerned with the efficacy of family based therapies.
