What does a Public Health Professional do?
Graduates in Health Science (Public Health) have an essential role in the health-care system. Their primary aim is to promote health and wellness of the whole population. Public Health graduates work in a variety of fields including health promotion officers, school health educators, assistant epidemiologists, researchers, state and national health program managers and health policy officers. During their training, many students at QUT combine study of Public Health with professional qualifications in Nursing, Human Movement Studies or Media and Communications. Some students prefer to focus on International Health and undertake overseas field training.
Regardless of which path you decide to take, completion of the BHSc (Public Health) prepares you to make a real difference to improve the health of many people in the community.
Pathways
The Bachelor of Health Science (Public Health) involves the study of a variety of disciplines essential for practice, including health system management and finance, psychology, sociology, communication, nutrition, epidemiology, statistics and evaluation methods. Practical placements in public health settings are used to develop skills to prepare you for the workplace.
Students can also tailor their own course to prepare themselves for postgraduate qualification necessary for some professional registrations including as an Environmental Health Officer or Occupational Health and Safety Officer. After some years work experience, BHSc (Public Health) graduates often complete further postgraduate programs to become epidemiologists, health managers.
Employment Opportunities
Many graduates are employed in Queensland Health
and national government health and education departments in areas such as health promotion practice, school health education, cancer prevention, sexual and reproductive health, epidemiology and research and evaluation.
Non-Government Organisations also employ BHSc (Public Health) graduates, including the National Heart Foundation
, the Queensland Cancer Council
and Family Planning Queensland
. In recent years our graduates have been successful in gaining positions in Federal Government health agencies and international organisations for health and development.
