Decision by the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission to revalue the Social And Community Services Award.
In her determination, Commissioner Fisher extensively cited evidence by Professor Bob Lonne
and Professor Karen Healy from UQ social work, and their joint research into workforce trends and curriculum issues in social work and the human services. The decision indicates the historical nature of social care work in the human services and how it has been widely perceived as "women's work" with the attendant pay rates being lower than other comparable professions. The pay rates were substantially increased over the next two and a half years, and are detailed at the end of the report.
This is excellent news for the sector as it helps to guarantee our workforce development and recruitment strategies. It is also great news for our students who can be assured of the high value the broader community places in their chosen careers. The SACS award is for social workers and human service practitioners in the not-for-profit sector and is the pay benchmark, although many NGOs, particularly the larger ones have enterprise agreements.
