Hi, I’m Jodie Loy and I’m currently studying a Master’s of Counselling at QUT.

The best thing about studying is I’ve been able to take what I’ve learnt here at QUT and practice it in my day to day work.

I’m currently working full time as a counsellor for an indigenous service. On a day to day basis, I meet with clients. I also supervise other staff and network within the community.

The course is wonderful because I can work full time and study and night part time. Once I’ve graduated from uni, not only will I be a better counsellor but I’ll be able to supervise other staff and advance in my career.

This course has been great for me because it not only has enhanced my skills as a counsellor but I’ve become more self aware and self reflective in my practice.

I really enjoy counselling because I get to meet new people, listen to their stories, watch them empower themselves and achieve their goals.

Hi, My name’s Huon Longman.

My research is about the social relationships between players of massively multiplayer online games and the friendships these players have which each other.

These online friendships are just like friendships you have in real life.

I like to liken it to a sporting team, you would come together to play a game of soccer or to kill a dragon and before the game and before the dragon killing, you talk about movies and music and what’s going on in your and that’s how you form friendships.

I get to work with a really really cool team of people, my supervisors are smart, their dedicated, they believe in my research and they have a big international standing.

The research that they produce here goes all around the world and has serious impacts all over the place.

As part of my research I’ve met researchers from Korea and communicating with someone from the states about what it is that I’m doing and how it can be used to make games better.

So one day my research will hopefully be used to make better online games and to make games that foster these friendships between players.

Hopefully bringing gamers all around the world closer together.

Hi, I’m Rachael. I work as a senior Psychologist at an inpatient eating disorders unit and a public hospital here in Brisbane.

The benefit of the QUT program was that it gave me the opportunity to study a range of Psycho Therapies. That has been immensely important in working not only with other health professionals but being able to tailor treatment to specific patient needs.

I wanted to have an integrated approach in my practice and QUT was the only university that I could find that would give me that. What stood out to me the most during my time there were the actual staff themselves.

As well as being really good teachers and lecturers, they really were hands on in their careers still in the community that they come from. They have a really good sense of social justice and I really respected them, they were really impressive people in their own right.

When I looked into it as a pathway to registration as a Psychologist, I really could see that the training that you get is of such a high standard.

I just think that the Masters programme really prepares you well for what is difficult work but also very rewarding.

The Masters of Counselling at QUT is a course that offers rich learning experience for anyone who’s interest or work focuses on growing individuals and groups and helping them to function in the best possible way.

Perhaps the most unique feature of the course is the opportunity that students have in their third year to work in the Psychology and Counselling Clinic, one of the public health clinics at the university.

So there’s a chance to practice skills and get very rich feedback from your peers and your supervisor.

The course program privileges collaborative and constructivist models of working with people such as solution oriented and narrative.

The course itself is also run on the principles and values that inform these frameworks and models.

One of the exciting things is to watch how students benefit from the reflecting team process.

This involves the counsellor working with the clients and a team observing that work, and then offering back reflections, comments and questions in a conversation they have in front of the counsellor and the clients.

This offers very rich learning and sometimes inspiration for the clients and the counsellor.

The masters at QUT is a course-based program and the classes run in evenings.

This and other features of the course make it user friendly for those students who are in full-time work.

It is not essential that students coming to the course are from a counselling background.

Many of the students and graduates of this course have come from discipline such as health, community arts, medicine, law, business, advertising – because the content and skills covered in the course are applicable to working with individuals and groups in many diverse settings.

If you’re looking for postgraduate study that offers the opportunity for personal and professional growth that comes from receiving rich feedback from your fellow students and staff, then this is your course.

Hi I’m Kylie, I’ve just completed my Bachelor of Behavioural Science and Psychology here at QUT.

With a degree in Psychology you’re able to move on to more academic stuff like honours, masters in clinical psyc, phd if you’re up for that.

Or you can move into the more real world stuff like working in counselling or therapy, maybe even HR.

The great thing about studying this degree is that you’re able to specialise in areas such as forensics, family therapy and road safety.

You can also take up other classes in faculties like law, business, and science as well.

This degree has a placement course, which is very valuable because it allows you to go out to different workplaces and gain some real experience.

The staff here at QUT are very helpful, they give you a helping hand whenever you need it, their supportive and approachable which I think is a very important thing and because they work in the real world they have really great practical experience which they are happy to share with us.

The highlight of my degree was being able to work in research with a professor at QUT.

We worked on a project looking at beliefs and attitudes of organ donation in Australia.

So I’m really passionate about Psychology and I guess that’s the main reason why I decided to do this course at QUT.

Just being able to understand why people do the things they do and how they act around each other, I think is probably one of the most interesting and exciting things about this course.

Hi, I’m Jacquie and I’m studying a Master of Psychology, Educational and Developmental at QUT.

I chose QUT because it’s the only university in QLD that offers educational developmental psychology in a masters program.

They offer you a wide variety of different practical experiences from overseas work, rural work or work here in Brisbane.

Another unique thing about the course is that it looks at clients and people across the life span.

So that’s from infancy right through to age care.

So for me I’m really interested in working with primary aged children, but I know that I’m developing the skills to work with a variety of clients from a variety of ages.

The psychology and counselling clinic here at QUT is open to the public.

It’s a relatively new facility so it means that when I come in I can use the new technology there and also in supervision it means that it offers you the best learning experience you could possibly have.

Another great thing about the course here at QUT is the staff lecturers and supervisors, they have such a wide variety of knowledge and expertise that you just can’t help but learn from them.

They’re also really, really engaged in your learning and want you to get the most out of every experience.

I love working in this field and particularly working with kids.

It’s such a high to see kids progressing and doing better and feeling better.

It’s something that I’ll never get sick of and I just love doing what I do.
