Research in the Faculty of Health addresses important health issues using a wide range of approaches. This involves multidisciplinary collaboration and groundbreaking research across a number of health-related areas. Our key areas of research include:

Ageing

Research at QUT is investigating successful ageing strategies, innovative systems of care, and the impact of age-related disease. Our research seeks to solve the numerous health and social issues the effects of an ageing population pose for Australia and overseas. The Dementia Collaborative Research Centre for Carers and Consumers Linked to another web site leads research to enhance the assessment and care of people with dementia, and their families.

Physical activity

The role of physical activity in the maintenance and restoration of health is a significant emerging area of research with implications for the prevention, treatment and management of a range of chronic disorders and occupational and sporting injuries.

Human health and wellbeing

Research activities in this area relate to health services, policy and management, and population health. Areas of strength include the management of chronic disease including quality of life and resilience, improving the care of hospitalised patients and managing early discharge, health outcomes for disadvantaged and minority populations, and prevention and management of mental health problems.

Human behaviour

Research in human behaviour embraces fundamental, social, cognitive, and developmental processes in psychology. This includes research in attitude theory, group behaviour and decision making, child and adolescent development, memory, psycholinguistics, and the development of reading.

Vision performance and improvement

Vision research includes collaborative efforts with other programs deriving from the main vision research activities, which are visual optics, lens design and performance, myopia and optics of the eye, visual performance studies, vision rehabilitation, vision s and driving and vision and falls, and clinical research into the ocular surface, effects of refractive surgery, colour vision and electroretinography.

Social work

Social work research is committed to understanding the needs of the diverse communities within which social work and human services practitioners work. The goal of social work research is to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable groups through contributing new knowledge that informs social policy and professional practice.

Accident and injury prevention

Road safety and workplace injury prevention are key areas of research that have already led to the successful implementation of behaviour intervention and education programs. The Centre for Road Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland Linked to another web site is a major collaborative research centre established as a joint venture of the Motor Accident Insurance Commission and QUT.
