Examples of our recent programs:
Sino-Australian Pharmacy Study Tour
Eight senior executives from a variety of Chinese hospitals, universities and pharmaceutical companies undertook an Australian Pharmacy Study Tour at QUT’s Faculty of Health.
The one-day program introduced participants to the Australian pharmacy system, financial management and funding arrangements, nutritional aspects of tube feeding, pharmaceutical aspects of tube feeding, patient care considerations of tube feeding, patient and family rights, patient safety systems and medical accident procedures.
The program included a panel discussion with QUT experts in the field, and a tour of Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital with the Director and Deputy Director of Pharmacy to see, first-hand, pharmaceutical best practice and the new robotic pharmacy inventory and dispensing unit (the first of its type in the world).
Strengthening Nurse Education in Central Java towards International Standards
Twelve leaders from Indonesian universities, polytechnics, academies and the Provincial Health Office from Central Java participated in an Australian Government (AusAID) funded Australian Leadership Award Fellowship program to strengthen nurse education to reach international standards in nursing practice and patient care.
The four-week program saw participants complete an intensive theoretical-based component reviewing contemporary Australian best-practice, developing knowledge about pedagogy and curriculum design, and gaining familiarity with standardised policies, procedures and systems. The theoretical knowledge acquired was complimented by practical visits to Brisbane public and private hospitals, and a site visit to Australia’s national nursing accreditation and registration bodies.
Over the course of the program, participants also developed SMART action plans for the future to create positive change on the path towards reform in Indonesian nursing education standards.
Peking University Disease Control and Health Services Management Program
Nine Peking University third and fifth year medical students completed a three-week program on disease control and health services management.
The three-week program examined relevant aspects of the Australian Health System, and compared and contrasted these with the system in China. The program maintained a practical, hands-on approach, and incorporated visits to health sector organisations, meetings with Australian health officials and health care providers, participation in relevant regular student lectures, participation in weekend cultural events and activities, and provision of a systematic framework to improve health professional English.
Emergency and Disaster Management
The Emergency and Disaster Management programs aim to develop and strengthen your leadership skills and provide you with techniques for managing health services strategies to ensure effective response arrangements and system recovery during major incidents and disasters.
Following SARS, the terrorist attacks in many countries and the recent natural disasters in the Asia/Pacific region there has been an increased focus on emergency and disaster management for public health workers. To meet this demand the School of Public Health has developed a number of short courses in emergency and disaster management.
Providing further focus and training in this area Professor Gerry FitzGerald and his team have developed a Fellowship program in Emergency and Disaster Management for delivery here at QUT to international public health workers. This program, funded by AusAID Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships, has to date delivered training to public health workers from China, Indonesia, Maldives, and Saudi Arabia.
