Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services)

I never thought I would come this far. Born into a low socio-economic family, life was always a struggle but my parents taught me the importance of persistence and hard work. Inspired by my mother's dream to help people, I chose human services. Even while I was studying I continued to represent Queensland and Australia in rugby union. Now I am the Acting Service Manager for Rapt Placement Support Services which delivers services to the families of children and young people in care.

(Steven's surname and photograph have been withheld for privacy reasons.)

My name is Steven and I am a graduate of QUT’s Bachelor of Human Services. I now work with the Department of Child Safety. My learning at QUT has equipped me with many of the skills required to effectively undertake work in the field of child abuse. The broad nature of the degree equips students with a sound knowledge base in relation to factors that impact and influence the human condition.

With such a broad structure, as opposed to specialising in one particular area, it allows workers/students to be adaptable to many work settings. Since working for the Department I have been located in many areas around Queensland. My learning at QUT has provided me with a strong ethical framework and strategies to cope with a lot of the misery and abuse that I see in my daily work.

My fondest memory of QUT is definitely the friendly staff. Never once did a lecturer refuse me assistance when I asked for it. This assistance was broad – from study support to personal support. I still regularly keep in touch with QUT staff long since graduation, and lecturers have still made themselves available to assist with ethical dilemmas or even proofreading selection criteria :-).

The support offered by QUT is fantastic. Undertaking the degree was a sound investment in knowledge and financially in my career. I recommend QUT and the Human Services Degree to anyone wishing to work in the broad field of Human Services. To current students, best of luck with your studies and your subsequent careers!

Master of Social Science (Human Services)

After graduating with a Bachelor degree in Social Science in Norway, I worked for the government with families and children. I had a desire to do research on welfare and social issues, and to achieve greater insight into social research, a Master of Social Science (Human Services) was a good choice for me. I could have done this grade in Norway, but I wanted a new experience culturally and educationally. The subjects are up to date and critically presented by professional and friendly staff. I feel better equipped to handle the challenges one faces as a social welfare worker.
